Best Time to Visit the Altai Mountains

The Mongolian Altai has four dramatically different seasons. Each season offers a unique experience, depending on what kind of traveler you are.

🌸 Spring (May – early June)

  • Snow starts melting
  • Rivers are fast and full
  • Great for photography

Not ideal for trekking, as passes may still be snow-covered.

☀️ Summer (mid-June – August)

  • The best time for trekking and camping
  • Wildflowers in full bloom
  • Nomads live in high pastures
  • Stable weather (10°C – 25°C)

🍂 Autumn (September – early October)

  • Golden valleys
  • Cool, crisp air perfect for photography
  • Eagle hunters return to lower valleys

❄ Winter (November – April)

Temperatures can drop below -30°C. Beautiful, but only recommended for winter specialists or professional photographers.

🎒 What Season Should You Choose?

  • Trekkers: July–August
  • Festival Travelers: September–October
  • Photographers: June or September
  • Cultural Travelers: June–October

For most people, the ideal months are July, August, and September.
