What to Pack for Western Mongolia

Packing for Western Mongolia requires thinking about three things: cold nights, remote conditions, and cultural respect. This list covers everything you'll need for trekking, festival visits, and nomad homestays.

Camp in the Altai Mountains, Western Mongolia

🧥 Clothing (Layering is Key)

Even in July, temperatures can drop to 5°C at night in the mountains. A layering system is essential:

  • Base layer: Merino wool or synthetic moisture-wicking tops and bottoms (2–3 sets)
  • Mid layer: Fleece jacket or light down jacket
  • Outer layer: Waterproof and windproof jacket (essential — weather changes fast)
  • Trekking trousers: Quick-dry, convertible trousers work well
  • Warm hat and gloves: Even in summer for early mornings
  • Sun hat: UV is intense at altitude
  • Buff/neck gaiter: For wind and dust

👟 Footwear

  • Hiking boots: Waterproof, ankle-supporting boots broken in before the trip
  • Camp shoes/sandals: For ger stays and relaxing at camp
  • Wool socks: At least 3–4 pairs (merino wool preferred)

🎒 Gear & Equipment

  • Daypack (20–30L): For day hikes (we carry the main luggage)
  • Sleeping bag: Rated to at least -5°C (we provide tents)
  • Trekking poles: Highly recommended for mountain terrain
  • Headlamp + spare batteries
  • Water bottles or hydration system: 2L capacity
  • Sunglasses: UV-rated, wraparound style
  • Dry bags or zip-lock bags: To protect electronics from rain

🏥 Health & Personal

  • Personal medications + prescription copies
  • Altitude sickness tablets (consult your doctor — Diamox)
  • High-SPF sunscreen (SPF 50+ recommended)
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent
  • Basic first aid kit: blister plasters, ibuprofen, antidiarrheal
  • Hand sanitiser and wet wipes (no running water in remote areas)

📱 Electronics

  • Power bank (large capacity — limited charging opportunities)
  • Universal adaptor (Mongolia uses Type C/E sockets)
  • Camera with extra memory cards (you will take a lot of photos)
  • Downloaded offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline)
  • Local SIM card (available in Ölgii — Mobicom has the best coverage)

📋 Documents

  • Passport (valid 6+ months beyond travel dates)
  • Travel insurance documents (printed and digital)
  • Emergency contacts
  • Copies of all documents stored separately

🏠 For Ger Stays & Cultural Visits

  • Small gifts: Sweets, tea, or small toys for children are appreciated
  • Modest clothing: Cover shoulders and knees when visiting families
  • Patience and curiosity: Your most important item

❌ What to Leave Behind

  • Valuables you can't afford to lose
  • Excessive luggage — we travel by small vehicles and horse
  • High heels or fashion shoes
  • Anything that can't handle dust, mud, or rain
