How to Fly to Ölgii: Domestic Flight Guide for Western Mongolia 2026
Getting to Bayan-Ölgii requires a domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar — there is no practical overland route that most travelers will consider. The good news is that flights now operate frequently through the summer season, and the 2.5-hour flight from Ulaanbaatar's domestic terminal lands you directly in the Altai.
This guide covers the current airlines, schedules, how to book, and what the experience is like.
Flying to Ölgii (ULG)
MIAT Mongolian Airlines
MIAT operates the main scheduled route between Ulaanbaatar (Buyant-Ukhaa domestic terminal) and Ölgii. In summer 2026 the schedule is:
- Route: Ulaanbaatar (ULN) ↔ Ölgii (ULG)
- Days: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday
- Season: June – September (some October flights for Eagle Festival season)
- Flight time: Approximately 2.5 hours
- Book at: www.miat.com
MIAT tickets sell out fast, especially in late September and early October around the Golden Eagle Festival. Book at least 6–8 weeks ahead for festival dates.
Hunnu Air (Charter Flights)
Hunnu Air runs charter flights to Ölgii in July and August, adding extra capacity during peak trekking season. 2026 dates:
- July: 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, 31
- August: 4, 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, 25, 28
- Book at: www.hunnuair.com or www.tapatrip.com
Hunnu Air charter fares are often slightly cheaper than MIAT and can be a good option when MIAT is sold out.
Flying to Khovd (HVD)
Khovd is the second major gateway to Western Mongolia, used by travelers heading to the southern Altai or combining Bayan-Ölgii with Khovd province. It is also a useful exit point — fly in to Ölgii, tour, and fly out from Khovd.
- Route: Ulaanbaatar ↔ Khovd
- Days: Tuesday, Friday, Sunday (summer season)
- Flight time: Approximately 2 hours
Practical Tips for Booking
- Book early: July and August flights fill up 4–6 weeks ahead. October (festival) flights fill even faster.
- Carry-on only: Domestic flights have tight baggage allowances — typically 10 kg checked, 5 kg carry-on. Trekking gear will likely cost extra.
- Airport transfer: Ölgii airport is 3 km from the town centre. Local taxis meet every flight; agree on a fare before you get in (around 5,000–8,000 MNT).
- Delays are common: Domestic Mongolian aviation is weather-dependent. Build buffer days into your itinerary — don't book an international departure the same day as your domestic return flight.
- Book through your tour operator: Altai Mount Travel can book domestic flights on your behalf and coordinate arrival times with your guide. This is the simplest option for most visitors.
